Monica was recently found wandering outside of the Columbus Statehouse by a Columbus City employee, who recognized she was impaired, injured and visibly pregnant. When the employee offered her help, Monica agreed. Monica shared that she had begun seeking treatment when she found out she was pregnant seven months ago. The team member reached out to multiple addiction treatment centers, but to no avail. Although the centers were not at capacity, none were prepared to admit a pregnant addict. Finally, Monica was put in touch with Mount Carmel West's Mission and Outreach Team. She met them at the doors of Mount Carmel West Emergency Department for treatment. After stabilizing Monica and her baby, the staff connected Monica to an outpatient rehabilitation center to continue support and treatment, and to ensure her baby is born into a safe environment.
Franklin County has a tremendous number of addicted mothers with no place to turn.
